Museum Bakkie

Museum Bakkie

Museum Bakkie is located in the east of Commewijne. Bakkie is the last inhabited plantation on the right bank of the Commewijne river. Museum Bakkie was founded by Marsha Mormon and Bas Spek. Marsha, born in the Netherlands, went looking for her roots and found the family plantation to which she turned out to be heir. The excavations at the Warappakreek, a canal that connects the Commewijne river to the Atlantic Ocean, were the beginning of the Museum’s collection and many historical masterpieces have since been added. Museum Bakkie has one of the most unique private collections in Suriname with many original books, letters, maps and artifacts, many of which cannot be seen anywhere else in the country. The day trip to Museum Bakkie has become one of the best-rated day trips in Suriname.
